My Life

The Glen Johnson Soccer SchoolGlen Johnson/U16 England
Glen Johnson/Millwall
Hi its me Glen Johnson, and it is a great pleasure for me to set this Soccer School up, as I know how much it means to all you children out there.
Back then I was in the exact same position as you,When you cant play enough football.

I remember how it all started for me, I was 10 years old and my PE teacher at school told my mum that I was a good player and that she should think about putting me into a sunday league team.
Mum asked me if I wanted to go to a local team called the YMCA who had been advertising in the local newspaper.
They needed players and I jumped at the chance of playing for a team.
I turned up the next week with no position and not much idea about the game, the manager soon sorted this out and played me as a centre forward, he said ''lets just see what happens''.
It started very quickly for me, I scored a hat trick on my debut and he kept me as a striker.
In my second game a West Ham United scout gave my mumGlen Johnson/U19 England a business card and invited me to go for a trial.
Mum asked me again if I wanted to go?.
To me and my friends WestGlen Johnson/Portsmouth FC Ham United were made from a team of superstars, which they are to most 10 year old children.
I did not realise they had youth teams and academies, so again I said yes.

My mum passed her driving test so she could start taking me to Chadwell Heath where i trained with West Ham twice a week.
I definately would not be where I am today if it was not for her support over the years.
My mum made the same journey everyday up until I was 17 years old, and then I could drive myself.
It is alot of hard work and effort but remember you do not get to where you want to be over night.
'It takes alot of time, hard work, dedication, determination and many sacrifices'.

When I was 17 Glenn Roeder the first team manager at West Ham United asked me if I wanted to go out on loan to gain first team experience.
The team was Millwall FC, and as my best friend Ben May playGlen Johnson/Chelsea FCed there this was an easy decision .
I agreed and was very excited about the move.
I signed for a 3 month loan period but after only 2 months West Ham United called me back to play in their first team.
I played 14 first team games for the rest of that season at right back.
That summer Chelsea FC made West Ham United an offer, which West Ham had accepted.
I had mixed emotions at the time, I was very sad that I had worked so hard for 8 years to get to West Ham Uniteds first team, but on the other hand I was looking forward to the challenge of playing for Chelsea FC.
I played for Chelsea FC for 4 years, where I made my England debut played in the Champions league and won various trophies.
The 4th year
year there I spent on loan with Portsmouth FC, Where I linked up with my original manager from West Ham United - Harry Redknapp.
I enjoyed the season there so much I signed a 4 year deal in the summer 2007.

'In all of your careers, and no matter what level of football you play at, you will have good times and bad times, but the most important thing is that you ENJOY yourself'
